Women’s and Children’s Inpatient Addition & Remodel
Avera McKennan Hospital
A six-floor addition to Avera McKennan Hospital will consolidate women’s and children’s care into one modernized location, allowing the hospital to serve a larger region and provide better access to the continuum of care. The new tower includes dedicated couplet care rooms, antepartum rooms, a labor and delivery unit with C-section OR’s, a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The addition will put the facility on par with nationally recognized women’s and children’s hospitals and give the Sioux Falls region a dedicated center of excellence for families. The project also creates a new grand front entrance for the hospital, an additional café, a gift shop, multiple outdoor patios, enhanced security, and shelled space to accommodate a future surgery expansion with a focus towards women’s and children’s care.
The experience of patients, staff, and family members was thoroughly considered in each space. Low-risk delivery rooms with tubs designed to feel more like home, amenity spaces for families, indoor and outdoor play spaces for children, and dedicated space for parents engaging in surrogacy or adoption thoughtfully address the individualized of needs of families. Each floor also includes break rooms, lactation rooms, and space for staff respite—all with the aim to focus on provider wellbeing within the center.
