Carroll University
Michael and Mary Jaharis Science Laboratories
Waukesha, Wis.
The Michael and Mary Jaharis Science Laboratories facility is the first new academic building on Carroll University’s campus in 50 years. The project did more than simply replace the outdated existing building for Wisconsin’s first four-year institution of higher learning; it embraced and represented Carroll’s strategic plan to “improve academic quality and strengthen the core educational experience for students.”
The design elegantly introduces a modern, state-of-the-art science facility into the surrounding historic buildings. New materials and concepts are graciously weaved into the traditional, becoming an integral part of the campus fabric. Inside, the facility supports highly flexible undergraduate instruction and research labs for chemistry and biochemistry, biology, environmental science, anatomy, and physics.
To facilitate collaboration between students and faculty, Carroll faculty expressed interest in easily accessible pin-up and discussion space. BWBR created nook areas in the corridors right outside the teaching laboratories, complete with magnetic glass marker boards, tack boards, and power sources, for planned and spontaneous interactions.
