Mother-Baby Center Buildout
MercyOne West Des Moines Medical Center
The mother-baby center had consolidated its services to downtown Des Moines, giving patients a single location for deliveries. This project supported its return to West Des Moines in response to continued population growth in the west metro and the reduction of labor and delivery services in other community hospitals. The facility features private birthing suites, postpartum suites, and a newborn nursery with a Level II neonatal intensive care unit that cares for newborns delivered at 32 weeks gestation or later.
BWBR’s design centered on hospitality, offering a spa-like feel for mothers and families. Rooms feature calming colors and minimal patterning that don’t overwhelm patients during long hours of labor. The ensuite bathrooms, equipped with pebble glass tile and a whirlpool tub, create a relaxing atmosphere. Gathering areas are spacious and inviting, designed for ease and togetherness. Throughout, the interiors mirror the previous mother-baby center at this location while updating the look to feel fresh and modern. The design also enhances technology and medical care to better serve expectant mothers for years to come.
