Emergency Department Expansion and Renovation
Confidential Healthcare Client
To support higher intake volumes and improve overall efficiency, this healthcare system partnered with BWBR to expand and renovate its Emergency Department (ED), a Level II Trauma Center. The renovation increased the department’s footprint by 50%, bringing it to nearly 30,000 square feet. Through Scenario Planning and the Lean 3P Process, the team reimagined operational flow, added treatment areas, improved security measures, and simplified navigation.
Safety and wellbeing were prioritized with a visible security station, clear sightlines throughout the unit, separate access points for walk-in patients and ambulance arrivals, and updated infrastructure for pandemic readiness. New spaces of respite for staff are secure, quiet, and daylit to prioritize wellness. Rooms designated for trauma, cardiac, infectious isolation, emergency imaging, and triage accommodate a wide range of needs, along with two behavioral health treatment rooms that can flex to become standard rooms. With increased capacity and thoughtful planning, the expanded ED is designed to support efficient operations now and into the future.
