Sandhills Global Technology Center for STEM Education
Southeast Community College
A transformative project for both Southeast Community College (SCC) and the greater Lincoln area, the Sandhills Global Technology Center is a regional hub for high-demand technology fields, designed to fill a skilled workforce gap. As home to science and technology programs including Biotechnology, Computer Information Technology, Design/Drafting, and Electronic Systems, a strong focus on hands-on learning and discovery is integrated throughout the facility. Work-based learning approaches involving technology assemblies, toolkits, lab spaces, and computer rooms are utilized in the Center. The building itself also serves as a learning tool with strategically designed ceilings and glass walls showcasing classrooms, workshops, and labs, as well as revealing functioning, high-performing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work overhead and active computer servers that are typically concealed.
The team drew inspiration from physical technology—servers, computers, and phones—translating familiar device characteristics into architectural form. The exterior incorporates lighting elements reminiscent of indicator lights on equipment, while custom wallcovering and glazing film draw from the circuitry of a motherboard. The design accommodates adaptability and flexibility for the campus, positioned to expand with a major future addition, as well as the building which offers limited complexity when change is needed.
