Carlson School of Management, Marilyn Carlson Nelson Hall Revitalization
University of Minnesota
To support the evolving world of business, the University of Minnesota partnered with BWBR and Clark Huesemann on a revitalization of the Carlson School of Management to meet today’s competitive business education needs. Connecting Carlson is the University’s mission for the renovation, elevating the facility to better promote collaboration, strengthen belonging, and enhance hands-on learning. With a focus on the school’s most prominent and frequently used spaces, the project will transform the facility’s atrium with new spaces for collaboration and outreach, as well as renovate the large main floor auditorium into a world-class learning and engagement environment. A new Enterprise Labs suite and a larger, relocated Carlson Analytics Lab space highlight the school’s distinctive Experiential Learning programs, offering opportunities to connect with Twin Cities corporations, gain hands-on business skills, and collaborate alongside staff, peers, and community partners. Select classroom and study spaces on the lower, first, and second floors will be modernized to maximize impact across the school.
The transformation is grounded in an aesthetic approach that better reflects the culture, values, and vision of the Carlson School of Management. The material palette is simplified to white walls, wood surfaces, and bold accents of color that highlight key elements, visually unifying the various spaces throughout the building. The new experience is energized with lighter tones, brighter lighting, and enhanced daylighting. This approach showcases the Carlson brand, its connection to the University of Minnesota, and its place and impact in Minnesota, the nation, and the world.
