City of Saint Paul Public Library
Rondo Community Library Remodeling
Saint Paul, Minn.
Rondo Community Library is centrally located in an inner-city community hub within a mixed-use development. As the busiest library in Saint Paul, it has been heavily used since its opening. BWBR created a design that reconfigured the space to better serve its patrons and refreshed carpeting, paint, and furniture, while staying within a modest budget.
A key project driver was improving the teen experience, as it is a popular after school destination. BWBR worked with teen users to identify and implement desired changes, including more dedicated space and better equipment. To accommodate all visitors, the central computer bank was split into several pods so people could choose a setting according to different ages and uses.
The design lowered shelf heights for better accessibility and visibility across the library space. New glass walls across the front of the study space create study spaces and a meeting space for community group meetings. The children’s collection was moved closer to the entrance and homework center for more convenient access for families with young children.
Size: 22,500 sq. ft.
Components: Reconfigured spaces to improve visitor flow through the spaces; refreshed interiors and furniture; bigger, more technology-infused teen center; lowered shelf heights while maintaining inventory; new meeting and quiet study area
