Replacement Critical Access Hospital

Maquoketa, Iowa

Challenged with an oversized facility and aging infrastructure, Jackson County Regional Health Center (JCRHC) embarked on journey to build a new Critical Access Hospital on a 25-acre greenfield site. The facility includes 12 beds, two ORs, an emergency department with five rooms, a 10-exam room specialty care clinic, two sleep rooms, a rehabilitation/wellness center, a diagnostic center including lab and radiology, pharmacy, and additional administrative/support areas.

BWBR conducted a week-long Lean 3P workshop that helped staff visualize opportunities, get excited about new, more efficient ways of working, and create consensus around the design. The planning process was focused on creating operational efficiencies and a positive patient experience. The team created full scale mock-ups of key areas, such as inpatient unit, surgery, emergency, rehabilitation, pharmacy, lab, and registration.
