Fargo, N.D.

2023 Citation of Excellence Award, Under 100,000 Sq. Ft., Learning by Design magazine

Fargo Public Schools completed an addition to Lewis & Clark Elementary that serves students who benefit from the specialized programs in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The district operates this facility based on a “school within a school” model, with the Explorer Academy serving as an extension of the existing Lewis & Clark Elementary. This model allows students to develop their academic, social, and personal skills and behaviors before seamlessly transitioning back into the general education setting.

A portion of the addition is leased to TNT Fitness for a sensory gym and the North Dakota Center for Distance Education for a maker space. These community partnerships create exciting opportunities for students.

Designed in partnership with local architect of record YHR Partners.

Size: 45,000 sq. ft.

Components: Special education classrooms; specialized therapy rooms; community-based sensory gym; maker space

Completion: 2021
