American flag for Memorial Day

American flag for Memorial Day

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day in the years following the Civil War, and it became a Federal holiday in 1971.

Most of us know of, or have friends or family, who have died while serving in the U.S. military. To all of those who have made the greatest sacrifice, we give our gratitude and remembrance. As an American holiday landing at the midpoint of the year, Memorial Day always falls on a Monday. This creates a three-day break that we know as Memorial Day weekend. The Memorial Day weekend is seen as the unofficial start of summer. As such, it’s a popular holiday enjoyed with outdoor gatherings, picnics, and travel. BWBR has asked our staff to share some of their thoughts on what this day and the holiday weekend means to them.
