Minnehaha County Jail Expansion
Souix Falls, S.D.
Nearly two decades after the Minnehaha County Jail replacement was completed, the County teamed again with BWBR to incorporate much-needed improvements to critical jail functions while addressing population needs. Following a BWBR-designed master plan, this most recent phase implemented a one-story vertical expansion to the existing five-story jail housing tower, as well as an adjacent three-story expansion that includes the creation of a common recreation area and connection to the existing jail. The project was completed under budget and fulfilled the County’s goals to provide a more flexible, efficient, and safe intake and booking area, and replace outdated and inefficient beds in the Community Corrections Center.
The expansion benefits law enforcement, jail staff, and offenders alike. The generous drive-through vehicle sallyport promotes safe, efficient offender transfer into the facility. The large, open intake and booking area are designed for safety and security while streamlining offender processing. A new offender property system ensures efficient, secure management of personal items. The Transition Housing Unit and arraignment courtroom are designed for separate short-stay and long-term populations and minimize the need for offender movement and transportation. In addition to adding critical capacity, the Minnehaha County Jail expansion was designed to meet the County’s goal of providing efficiency and flexibility within a highly safe and secure environment.
