What should I expect as a recent graduate?
If you have a fresh architectural degree in hand you’ll find that BWBR takes a strong interest in helping you work toward becoming a registered architect. In fact, we’ve been recognized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for our participation in the AIA’s Intern Development Program. As one intern noted, “what I found at BWBR was not simply an organized IDP process, but an environment devoted to learning where IDP was part of a much larger mentorship attitude and approach ... At BWBR, I have not simply fulfilled IDP requirements, I have made the transition to the architectural profession.”

What kind of training does BWBR provide?
From seminars and discussion forums on design and construction topics and products to construction site visits, BWBR provides plenty of “real world” learning opportunities for young designers and technicians. The informal mentoring that’s simply part of the BWBR culture also has a tremendous impact. As one employee two years out of school put it, “We design buildings in small teams, which allows younger staff to take on as much responsibility as we can, while still giving us a safety net for mistakes. (After all, don’t we learn the most from our mistakes?) And, my project teams are just the tip of the iceberg for professional support I get here; someone is always willing to take the time to answer my questions or point me in the right direction.”

How are project teams structured at BWBR?
Our approach to a project involves small teams and a collaborative effort. Each team is assembled to meet the unique needs of the project. Each member has a distinct role, which can vary depending on the scope of the work and the project type. This allows team members a diverse range of responsibilities and experiences.

BWBR believes that effective project management is just as important as design innovation. After all, our clients have every right to expect a facility that functions as great as it looks.

Who does what on a project team?
Every project at BWBR is led by a partner, who takes hands-on responsibility for project management, contract administration, and client satisfaction. Project Managers are the day-to-day “quarterbacks,” raising issues to be addressed and ensuring that the design is appropriate, flexible, buildable, and that it addresses the owner’s program, schedule and budget. Design Leaders provide design and creative leadership to help meet a project’s goals with innovative solutions and turn the client’s vision into a built reality. Project Architects coordinate the project team and assume responsibility for project communication and documentation. Staff Architects are responsible for the daily work efforts, documentation and detailing, and coordination of systems, supported by Intern Architects and Technicians. Interior Designers coordinate interior architectural plans and details, as well as coordinate selection and documentation of interior colors, materials, finishes, and furnishings.

Some architects also specialize in certain areas and fill specific, focused roles such as medical planning, construction administration, code review, specification writing, and quality assurance.

Are there opportunities for non-architectural staff?
We also have opportunities for administrative and operations staff, including project administrative assistants, information technologies, accounting and human resources, marketing and graphic design.

What is the advancement path within the firm?
BWBR is 100% employee owned, by roughly a quarter of our staff. The first step toward ownership is the position of Associate, offered by the Board of Directors. Associates may eventually have the opportunity to purchase shares of stock. Shareholders participate in goal setting, policy decisions and contribute to other corporate business at regular shareholder meetings. Executive leadership rests with the firm’s principals – the sixth generation of ownership – each of whom holds a management responsibility for one or more operational aspects of the firm.

The total architect
BWBR is dedicated to a work culture that allows employees to acquire experience, build expertise, and pursue advancement. BWBR believes in developing the “total architect” – one who not only designs/draws, but who understands the ramifications of architecture in its environment, and the importance of function as well as form. The total architect must also be able to articulate ideas verbally, and lead a group to consensus-based decisions. If you have the talent and the desire, we can provide the opportunity.
