  Rutherford Elementary: Vision to Reality

A drawing by Katie Edison, a student at Rutherford, symbolizes the inclusive design process and child-centered spirit of the school

District leaders, staff, parents, and architect came together to create a building that matched the district’s mission statement: “To ensure high quality, innovative, challenging education where all learners are valued and respected.” The design met the challenge of developing a school that provided both the efficiency of a school of 800 with the familiar warmth of a school with 200 students. The result provides an intimate setting for elementary students in a building with flexible open space where independent and diverse learning occur.

“It feels kid friendly. It’s not boring. It invites creativity. It’s child-centered.” Comments visitors shared with the principal when the Rutherford Elementary opened help confirm that the new school’s goals were met.
