  Rutherford Elementary: Town Square

The whimsical nature of this area encourages kids to enter, use, and celebrate the media center as their connection to the world beyond

The media center is similar to a Town Square, a two-story space at the heart of the building that is connected to the “neighborhoods” that foster different activities. The central feature of the media center is a walkway, which serves as a hub connecting to other areas. It also represents the media center’s purpose as “bridge” to the community and the world through books, the Internet, and other media.

Everything about the media center – scale, colors, and details – is a reminder that this place is for children. Colorful sculptures of playful kids adorn the walkway. Overhead, an elongated skylight fills the space with natural light. Beneath the walkway, private reading areas are tucked among popsicle-stick-shaped columns, surrounded by bookshelves and crescent-shaped benches.
