The Metropolitan Council, the Twin Cities regional planning
agency and operator of Metro Transit, established sustainability
and green design as one of its goals for the project.
Sustainable buildings offer numerous benefits to building owners
and occupants. Sustainable strategies prolong building life, lower
energy and water use, reduce maintenance and cleaning costs, enhance
occupant comfort, and create positive public relations.
The East Metro Transit Facility is practically a textbook case
study in what BWBR calls Performance Design or
sustainable design. The highest levels of sustainability consider
a buildings environmental impact, from design through construction
and occupancy, finding ways to preserve energy and natural resources.
As a result, the design team explored many sustainability options,
including energy, site, water, indoor environment, and building
material strategies.
