Performance design is a holistic approach intended to reduce the life-cycle cost of the building and increase the well-being and productivity of its occupants

Performance Design

The Metropolitan Council, the Twin Cities’ regional planning agency and operator of Metro Transit, established sustainability and “green design” as one of its goals for the project. Sustainable buildings offer numerous benefits to building owners and occupants. Sustainable strategies prolong building life, lower energy and water use, reduce maintenance and cleaning costs, enhance occupant comfort, and create positive public relations.

The East Metro Transit Facility is practically a textbook case study in what BWBR calls “Performance Design” – or sustainable design. The highest levels of sustainability consider a building’s environmental impact, from design through construction and occupancy, finding ways to preserve energy and natural resources. As a result, the design team explored many sustainability options, including energy, site, water, indoor environment, and building material strategies.
