Energy Conservation

Conservation of energy in the facility has the greatest positive impact on the environment. The use of energy-efficient mechanical systems, daylighting controls, window glass alternatives, and efficient air handling units saves 27% of the energy used in an average building.

In addition to the active energy-saving strategies, the EMTF team designed passive strategies into the building to make it more efficient. A large portion of the building’s southwest corner is sited underground, reducing summer heat gain and insulating the building during Minnesota’s harsh winters. Light monitors in the bus storage and maintenance areas reduce the need for electrical light during the day while giving employees the benefits of natural light. Extensive daylighting studies determined optimal use throughout the facility, saving on energy costs in addition to enhancing the work environment.
