McCollum Science Hall Addition: Let's Explore Science!

The site plan shows the round tank and the building that houses the chillers

Located next to Interstate Highways 35E and 94, the new chiller has become a visible addition to St. Paul’s skyline.

Stats for this unique structure:

  • The chiller building is 60 feet tall.

  • The tank diameter is 90 feet. It is also 90 feet tall.
  • Each of the steel tank rings is 10 feet high. A second layer of 4-foot by
8-foot insulation panels wraps around the outside of the steel shell.
  • Four million gallons of water are stored in the tank. That’s enough water to cover a football field 14 feet deep!
