The District Energy St. Paul’s Thermal Storage Tank and Chiller Building

District Energy of St. Paul has a new thermal storage tank and chiller facility. District Energy distributes hot and cold water to buildings throughout
downtown St. Paul, which use it to heat and cool commercial, retail, and residential spaces. The hot water portion of the network is the largest in
North America.

District Energy uses this plant to take advantage of less expensive off-peak electrical rates. Water is chilled at night, stored in the insulated tank, and is drawn from the bottom of the tank to distribute to buildings throughout downtown during the day.

Buildings connected to the District Energy network do not need their own chillers and cooling towers. That saves space and money.
