McCollum Science Hall Addition: Past, Present, Future

The view from the Capitol complex and public traffic routes was a critical design consideration

The Exterior Fits the Community Fabric

Outside, the new DHS building uses buff-colored Minnesota limestone to reflect the nature of the Capitol buildings to the north, from which the new facility is directly visible. Traditional red brick and modern glass echo the urban character of downtown Saint Paul, while a curved metal roof identifies the building from the adjacent interstate highway. Its timeless design is attractive from all sides, melding the Capitol mall with the rest of downtown Saint Paul and expressing a transition from the freeway to the city and from the community to the neighborhood.
