Minnesota Correctional Facility–Rush City

Rush City, Minn.

A Level 4 close custody correctional facility, the Rush City Correctional Facility houses inmates in one of four buildings comprising eight housing units. Each housing unit features a central core and dayroom surrounded by two independent, two-level housing units. Two housing units were designed as segregation units with single-bunk cells and additional security features and materials. A number of cells are fully accessible to inmates with disabilities, and the complex features a both a medical and dental clinic.

The large, flat site facilitated a design that accommodates six separate buildings, including an administrative building sited outside of the security perimeter and connected to a centralized support building via an internal security link. Innovative measures including 288 prefabricated and prepainted cell modules helped reduce costs and meet a tight construction schedule. Latter projects include remodeling the education, pill distribution and industry areas as well as a vehicular sally port security study.

The first new male correctional facility in nearly 20 years, the Rush City Correctional Facility was the largest capital works project in Minnesota’s history at the time to be subjected to an Environmental Impact Study and environmental permits.
