Transportation facilities pose some very specific design challenges.
They often involve large-span structures and "industrial strength"
engineering systems. Frequently, there are special regulations to
meet and approvals to obtain. They must be comfortable and appropriate
in scale for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. They should
be easy to find, and easy to navigate through. Appropriate safety
and security solutions are important. And function, cost-efficiency
and durability are paramount.
Sometimes these facilities are strictly functional, with little
exterior design articulation. Other times, the budget enables the
design team to integrate design cues from the site and surrounding
neighborhood so the ramp or transit facility blends in and belongs.
When they look good and work hard, we know our job is well done.
