Detention, correctional and government facilities play many roles
and call for a delicate balancing act during the design process.
As workplaces, their design has a huge impact on the day-to-day
morale, safety and security of the staff. As civic buildings, they
must effectively serve the masses who come and go, demonstrate a
respectful use of the public funds that built them, and reflect
a communitys pride as a visible symbol of democracy at work.
Detention and corrections facilities are also places of punishment,
rehabilitation, and housing that must accommodate the full range
of daily human activity within a secured, restricted, controllable
environment while blending into their surroundings in a way
that respects the free population around them. Its the kind
of challenging, technical, creative work that BWBR thrives on.
